Many of us turn to social media for everything from answers to burning questions and recipe suggestions to the latest news and trending topics. It makes sense that recruiters have followed suit and are also using Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to reel in their next employee hopefuls.
In a recent survey, recruiting platform Jobvite reported that 94% of recruiters rely on social recruiting when looking for candidates. The company also stated that businesses that found new hires on social media had better candidate quality and quantity.
Mashable covered a story recently featuring Clay Walker, who described how he landed his job in a well-known barbershop with Instagram. He didn’t use a resume or cover letter—just a strategic social media strategy involving hashtags and filters. Because there are a ton of barbershops and hair salons that use social media to build their brand by posting photos of their clients and styling tips, Walker found this method to be an easy “in.”
The trick is to understand the field you want to find your dream job in and doing a bit of research on the company.
Here are some other ways to land that job by using social media:
· Use a headshot in your profile picture across all your social media platforms and stay consistent.
· Instead of sending a tweet to a company you’d like to work for that says, “I WANT TO WORK FOR YOU!” try reaching out with something that shows your interest and a link to a project that would appeal to them. “I recently wrote a blog post about shopping for the perfect wedding gown you may be interested in!” may get a raised eyebrow with that bridal boutique looking to hire a Bridal Sales Consultant. Think outside the box!
· See if the company you are interested in is hosting a Twitter chat and tune in! Tweet to them with some questions or concerns that show you have a real understanding of their product and brand.
· Build meaningful relationships with people who work at your company of choice. Follow them online and connect on LinkedIn!
